University of Colorado – Ski Team
ELDORA – Snow covering the mountains is usually a perfect recipe for skiing. For Ski racers, too much snow hinders speed and creates a dangerous environment for reaching top speeds and hurling around the gates. The CU Ski Team, led by alpine captains NORA CHRISTENSEN and MAX LUUKKO, took on the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association highlighted by teams from the University of Denver and University of Utah at the beginning of 2019 in northern Colorado.
Newton Aerials was contracted to complete daily video recaps and support the CU Athletic Department in covering the 2019 CU Ski Invitational. Alpine races, including a newly emerging race format of dual slalom that the NCAA hopes to develop, took place at Eldora Mountain Resort over three days, concluding with the dual slalom race event. Luckily, the weather for all races held until Friday afternoon, when the Men’s slalom race had to be postponed due to excessive quantities of snow. Following the Alpine Ski races, the nordic teams prepared for two days of racing at Howelson Hill in Steamboat Springs, CO.
The first day of nordic races began slowly for the Buffs, but a readjustment and opportunity for a mass start race on the second day of races allowed for the ladies nordic races to learn from the Men, who raced earlier in the morning and allowed for wax adjustments. With four female racers in the top ten of the final nordic race, the CU team finished in 3rd place overall after the 5-day invitational.
